One idea I've thought of recently is to take the train from Brighton to Polegate and then follow the national cycle network route along the cuckoo trail heading north to near Crowborough and then heading west to Crawley. Could then take train back to Brighton or cycle the small lanes via Ditchling or just head down the cycle network alongside the A23. I have maps for it but I'm not sure if the whole route is road bike friendly as I've not tried it yet. Does anyone else have experience of it? I think Polegate to Crawley is about 40 miles, then from Crawley to Brighton would probably add about another 20 or so.

that does sound good jake, would def avoid the a23 cycle path though, it's pretty convienent to get out to the downs with out dealing with the dyke or the beacon but if I've got the time I'd always go the long way round

I've done a similar route but in reverse. Again, if you get the train out to Eastbourne or Polegate then head towards Pevensey, cut in to Herstmonceaux via the marsh roads and then head Heathfield way then on to Uckfield area and loop back in to Brighton. Most of it can be done on lovely quiet back roads without even having to touch the cycle routes. That's about 60 miles of some nice varying terrain. Enough to offer a few challenges but not enough to kill you. Finishing on the Dyke might be a bit of an effort though :)

so how'd you get on Clive? me and a few other from the forum went for a spin when you were sheltered from the wind was perfect riding conditions.
